Part one
Chapter 1. The Melekhov’s yard is located on the edge of the farm, near the Don itself. Prokofiy Melekhov returned from the Turkish company with his Turkish wife. Soon, a house was built away from everyone, because the couple did not get along with fellow villagers, especially the Turkish woman; women whispered disapprovingly about her. This year there was a cattle death, uneducated people decided that it was a Turkish woman, she was probably a witch. A crowd came to the house of Prokofia, grabbed a woman and beat her. Her husband repulsed her, but it was already too late: premature birth and death. The son went out, called Pantelei. His father married him to a Cossack, Pantelei "ate" the farm and successfully dealt with it. He and his wife had three children - Peter, Gregory and Dunyashka. Also part of the family was Peter's wife, Daria with a child.
Chapter 2 The story begins on a summer day: Pantelei Prokofievich woke up, released the cattle, the daughter-in-law Daria ran to milk the cows, and he went to wake Gregory himself. They go fishing. The son claims that they will not catch anything, a month is running out, in his heart he is angry with his father who woke him up. But suddenly pecks. With great difficulty they got a huge carp. Pantelei Prokofievich hesitantly starts a conversation with Grigory that there are rumors about the guy’s relationship with Aksinya Astakhova. The son blushes, but says that these are just slander. Father warns that he will lock up and will not let in games. But Gregory himself thinks that this cannot happen. But he doesn’t say anything out loud, his father relents and allows him to sell carp to buy tobacco. On that they parted, the son goes to sell the fish to the merchant Mokhov, together with Mitka Korshunov, whom he met. Along the way, they joke with the Shamil brothers. At Mokhov they were met by a girl (daughter of the merchant Elizabeth), led Grigory to the house, and she spoke to Mitka herself. Elizabeth said that she would also like to fish and suggests Korshunov to take it with him, secretly calling her in the morning. Mitka agrees, after which the girl wonders why Korshunov is not married and whether the girls love him. A playful conversation is interrupted by the newly arrived merchant Mokhov.
Chapter 3 Gregory came from the games in the morning, the little nephew did not let him fall asleep. The child was not pleased with the awakening and Daria, but she began to cradle him. Gregory began to fall asleep under a lullaby, but remembered that he needed to give Peter the combatant a horse. Returning from the river, he met his mother, who told him to go to wake the Astakhovs, because Stepan would go with Melekhov. Gregory, having come to the neighbors, sees Aksinya sleeping, from this sight dries in his mouth, so he quickly leaves as soon as the Astakhovs woke up. At this time, the whole family gathers Peter. Gregory goes to drink this horse, along the way he meets Axinho. Between them there is a humorous conversation about how Aksinya will live without a husband, how Gregory will come in handy for her, and whether the latter should be married. Upon returning with the horse, brother and Stepan leave.
Chapter 4 It's starting to rain. Dunyasha, doing housework, envies children who can run in the rain. Grigory and Pantelei Prokofievich are going fishing, Daria sews them up dragons. The weather is not suitable for fishing: a thunderstorm begins, thunder scares women. Fishermen are going to call Aksinya for nonsense fishing, which will call another neighbor, Malashka. Both women agreed. At first, everything was going well, but such fishing is highly dependent on the current, the side where Grigory and Aksinya were was taken very strongly to the shore, the woman even stopped responding, so Melekhov swam to her. And at that time Pantelei Prokofievich was more fortunate, he caught a whole bag of sterlet. After trying luck again, Gregory and Aksinya are going home on a short road. Melekhov invites Astakhova to bask in the mop, because she cannot stand the cold before home. He himself lay down beside him and tried to hug her. Aksinya calls Pantelei Prokofievich.
Chapter 5 Serving Cossacks, including Peter Melekhov and Stepan Astakhov, go to the camp. They are singing.
Chapter 6 Cossacks stopped for the night. One of them, Christony, makes porridge and tells the tale about the treasure he was looking for with his father. But instead of gold, coal was dug, for which the chieftain scolded them.
Chapter 7 Aksinya was married to Stepan at 17. Previously, her own father raped her, for which he was killed by the girl’s brother and mother. After marriage, Aksinho was immediately forced to do all the housework. And her husband immediately beat her, did not forgive the "corruption". Stepan was unfaithful to her, he closed her at home, and became quiet only after the birth of a child. But the baby did not live to see a year, everything went as before, and then Gregory appeared, and Aksinya realized that she was drawn to a neighbor. She decided to see the guy as little as possible.
Chapter 8 The farmers divided the meadow for future mowing, the Melekhovs are going to mow their plot and the Astakhovs, at the request of Stepan for help (in return Aksinya will help during the entire mowing). The next day, Mitka Korshunov arrives to Gregory on a beautiful horse. It turned out that he argued with the centurion Listnitsky that his horse is better than that. Melekhov agrees to take part in the races, where Mitka wins. Returning, friends notice Axinho. She lowers her head lower and does not say hello, for which Gregory jumps to her and sprinkles mud, and then apologizes for the recent incident. Aksinya confusedly says that she is not angry, but rather leaves. Gregory is upset, even refuses to go to the games.
Chapter 9 The Melekhovs were late with a mowing. Pantelei Prokofievich, Grigory, Aksinya, Daria and Dunyashka came to mow. Even despite the clear execution of the work, in the thoughts of Melekhov Jr. was only Astakhov. But Aksinya harshly ridiculed Gregory all day, and the suspicious father sent him to guard the bulls (they decided to spend the night, having finished in the morning). Blacker than night were Melekhov’s thoughts when he guarded the bulls. But then Aksinya herself came to him, ready for anything.
Chapter 10 Grigory and Aksinya did not hide their connection, so soon the rumor reached Pantelei Prokofievich. And they told him in a jokingly insulting manner in the shop of Mokhov. The old man immediately went to Aksinya and began to shame her, threatening to write to Stepan. She drove him away, saying that the rumors did not lie, but she would not back down from her happiness. At home Pantelei Prokofievich immediately hit his son with a crutch, threatened to marry by force.
Chapter 11 The camp, where the exercises have already served Cossacks, live a normal life. During his illness, Stepan Astakhov learned a terrible rumor about his wife’s infidelity.
Chapter 12 The last two weeks, the relationship of Gregory and Aksigny has been increasingly crazy. The farm did not forgive that the connection was open. One night, they got into a bitter conversation about the imminent arrival of Stepan and the likely marriage of Gregory. Lovers cannot do anything with these circumstances (Melekhov refuses to leave the farm), Aksinie is especially bitter about it, she cries quietly when her lover is already falling asleep.
Chapter 13 Relations between Stepan and Peter sharply worsened. Returning home, the men argued, a skirmish ensued, and then their breeches collided, Astakhov’s horse broke his leg, for which he rushed into a fight with Melekhov. They were separated. They left a horse on a farm, passing by which there lived an old woman treating horses.
Chapter 14. Aksinya visited the old sorceress to bewitch Gregory. On the day of the magical rite, Stepan returned. They understood each other without words, the wife was ready for the beatings, but the husband first ate, and then thoroughly proceeded to beating. The carnage moved to the courtyard, where Aksinya ran out. There Stepan was noticed by the Melekhov brothers. They did not let the husband kill his wife, they themselves got involved in a fight. From this day hostility began between them.
Chapter 15 The Melekhovs have a revival: they are going to go out to get married, to help this they called the matchmaker Vasilisa. The parents of the groom and matchmaker were the first to enter, started a conversation, and Grigory appeared behind them. Pantelei Prokofievich speaks with the father of the alleged bride, Miron Grigorievich Korshunov, their conversation so far is preliminary. It turns out the daughter, Natalia, on this her role is ending. He and Gregory looked at each other amiably. We parted on the fact that they decided to consult about possible matchmaking in both families.
Chapter 16. Stepan beat and tortured Axinho, questioned about his relationship with Gregory. She suffered, but did not say anything. The woman saw Melekhov himself only once, he called her in sunflowers, since Stepan was leaving. Having quickly escorted her husband, Aksinya ran to the meeting. Their conversation is sad: she complains, but he does not want to regret. Astakhova cried, Melekhov was ashamed, but, nevertheless, tells her that it is time to end the relationship. Aksinya is gone.
Chapter 17 During the mowing, Pyotr Melekhov tells his brother how he was seen in sunflowers with Aksinya. Gregory is angry, throws himself at his brother with a pitchfork, and he gives him a handle on his back. But this fight is more like a joke, so soon the brothers are already talking amicably. But who saw this wife, Christoni understood everything differently, she told Pantelei Prokofievich, who had hurriedly arrived, having prepared a dangerous arapnik for the proceedings. But the brothers managed to explain everything.
Chapter 18. Natalia agreed to marry only one Gregory, otherwise at least to the monastery. And her mother persuaded Miron Grigoryevich. That is why the Korshunovs agreed to intermarry with the Melekhovs, despite the lower prosperity of the latter. The future matchmakers immediately drank, after three bottles they immediately became friends. But Natalia was frightened by the unknown.
Chapter 19. In the bride’s house, preparations for the wedding were in full swing, she herself knitted a traditional scarf. And her brother Mitka harassed her, scolding the groom and promising her misfortune in marriage. His grandfather Grishak drove him away. Natalia was his beloved granddaughter, and she answered him with love, and also looked after his grandfather. Future marriage in the soul upset grandfather. And Natalya was waiting for this with happiness and horror.
Chapter 20. Aksinya was devastated inside. Outwardly, she seemed to be reconciled with her husband, but to herself, she decided to take away Gregory from everyone again.
Chapter 21 The wedding day has come. Both parties observe all the traditional methods (wit of the matchmaker and matchmaker, bride ransom, etc.). During a hearty meal, Gregory examined the bride, and he became dreary, he remembered Axinho.
Chapter 22. The young were married in a church. Peter barely got to the ceremony, as he had drunk, but Daria helped him.
Chapter 23. After the church again a plentiful table, conversations, songs, dances.
Part two
Chapter 1. The clan of the merchant Mokhov was known for a long time. Even his ancestor was engaged in trade, and also reported on troubled Cossacks. Sergei Platonovich himself began his business from the bottom, collecting a penny of capital. And it was a success. But affairs took him away from his family - the daughter of Lisa and the son of Volodya, his mother died, his stepmother did not follow them. One summer, Volodya came on vacation, went to the mill and spoke to the workers. Those reacted in his own way to him, one of them, Davydka, said that Mokhov Sr. - "lived", terribly stingy. Volodya threatened to tell his father that the employee was humiliated and asked not to do this. Despite the promise of the gymnasium student, he decided to still complain. Father promised to fire Davydka. In the evenings, the farm intelligentsia gathered at Mokhov, sometimes he arranged festive dinners, and usually he hid from the people behind a high fence.
Chapter 2 Mitka met with Elizabeth Mokhova, and she recalled fishing. They again have a humorous conversation with elements of the ambiguities that led the companion of Elizabeth, a student of Baryshnikov, to the idea that Mitka is a friend of her heart. The latter is preparing for fishing with all his might, asking his grandfather to wake him. The old man barely managed to fulfill his promise. But the grandson gathered and went to Elizabeth. She soon left, although the dream prevailed. Mokhov had to carry to the boat. Korshunov accidentally stumbled, it turned out that they kissed briefly. From this Mitka lost his head, drove Elizabeth to a deserted shore and dragged into the bushes. They returned at nine o’clock. Mokhova is exhausted and tired, at parting with hatred she looks at Korshunov. Rumor immediately crept along the farm. And came to the father of Elizabeth. Mitka was about to get married. The girl herself refused him, his father too, he even let the dogs down to the groom.
Chapter 3 Natalia liked the father-in-law for being flexible and hardworking. And Gregory realized that he had not forgotten Aksinya. Moreover, Natalia reminded of this with her awkwardness, unlike Astakhova. And they seemed to be reconciled with Stepan, singing in the evenings. Gregory could only look sadly at his beloved. These views were jealously noticed by Natalia.
Chapter 4 In the cossack village of Fedot Bodovsky, a stranger met in the village and moved to the farm. He asked to be let down and asked along the way about a farm life. The name of the visiting Shtokman, he is going to work as a locksmith. Fedot helps him with a device for an apartment.
Chapter 5 Gregory and Natalia went to plow. And Peter and Daria went to the mill, where there was a quarrel. The Cossacks argued with the Taurians for the line, a fight ensued. The latter ran, throwing all the bags. The winners were about to catch up, but Shtokman appeared, spoke to the Cossacks, the moment was missed. And at night, Gregory admitted to Natalia that he did not love her.
Chapter 6 Ukrainians and Cossacks had a long feud, it was dangerous for them to find themselves on the opponent’s land alone. The investigator came to disassemble the fight at the mill. Shtokman is also being called up, his revolutionary activity is becoming known. The investigator advises him to leave.
Chapter 7 On the Maidan it’s crowded - the gathering is dedicated to chopping wood. Cossacks argue and cannot decide when to chop. Such a gathering is a way to communicate, and not just solve business issues. Therefore, the Cossacks carefully listened to the next tales of Avdeich Brech, who loved to lie about his service. For example, he told how the emperor himself asked him to catch a robber, and then drank tea with him. From this the listeners laugh.
Chapter 8. Pantelei Prokofievich on his return goes to Ilyinichna, who is sick. He tells the news, asks about Natalia, something is wrong with her. Pantelei Prokofievich himself notices this when he sees them with Grigory at work. In the morning they are going to the chopping-off vanity in the house. The Melekhov brothers ride together, meet Neighbor Anikushka, then Stepan Astakhov, who broke a cart, comes across. Aksinya stayed with the cart, and there she met with the Melekhovs. Gregory left to talk to her. Astakhova admitted that she cannot live without him. Melekhov pulled her to him.
Chapter 9 Different people came to Shtokman, read books, for example, “The History of the Don Cossacks,” which honestly described the oppression of the Cossacks. One of those who came, Christony, tells the story of a service where students gave guards, including a narrator, money to drink for Karl Marx's health. Shtokman agrees that it’s worth a drink.
Chapter 10 In the village of Veshenskaya built those who still have to serve, including Gregory and Mitka. They swear an oath to them, and Melekhov thinks about his. They all come back together, they notice the wolf. When Gregory entered the house, he realized that something was wrong, something with Natalya. Turns out she's about to leave. Gregory pretends not to know what is the matter. The father claims that the fault is on the son, if he does not live with his wife - let him leave. Gregory does so, not listening to the calls of his unloved wife.He goes to spend the night at Mikhail Koshev. He lets him in, Melekhov before going to bed decides to leave somewhere with Aksinya. In the morning he recalls that he is still awaiting service and the camp in front of her, this complicates the matter. Melekhov asks Koshevoy to go to the Astakhovs and make an appointment with Aksinya in the evening. The woman barely escaped from the house, but still came. She agrees to go with her lover anywhere. In addition, she is pregnant, she is sure that from Gregory. But he doesn’t tell him yet.
Chapter 11 Gregory is trying to engage Mokhov, but he has no place. But the merchant had a centurion Listnitsky, who agreed to arrange both Melekhov and Astakhov in the estate of his father as workers. Liznitsky Sr. agrees to this proposal, the next day you need to start.
Chapter 12 Aksinya was waiting all day for news from Gregory. Finally, the sister of Mikhail Koshevoy came and said that Astakhova needed to pack up and come to him. Fortunately for the wife, the husband is going to play cards. Only after seeing Stepan, Aksinya quickly packed up and ran to Gregory, so much so that her stomach even got sick. She dutifully follows her lover, without even asking where exactly. Stepan, noticing his wife’s departure, cuts off her clothes and begins to yearn.
Chapter 13 Miron Grigorievich did not have a day. The bull teared the mare's throat, the owner himself sewed. Then even worse - Natalia came, talking about her misfortune and begging to pick her up. Father agreed.
Chapter 14. Old Listnitsky lived alone with his son, and even then, the last on the estate was arrivals. The hired Aksinya enthusiastically set to work, trying to please everyone, including the cook Lukerye. Gregory spent time in the stable with the groom Sasha, who enjoyed favor with the pan. Tikhon, a friend of Lukerya, was jealous of her for Sasha, and sometimes showed him his displeasure. Eugene, the son of a pan who hired Gregory, at first liked to talk to him. With a wandering gaze, he said that Aksinya is beautiful. He, too, struggled to seduce her, causing her irritation.
Chapter 15 Natalia lived with her father with the hope of the return of her husband. But her brother began to look at her differently, directly to pester her. This even more poisoned the life of Natalia. One day her father-in-law met her and invited her to say that Gregory was not worth her fingernail.
Chapter 16. At Shtokman's evenings, they are going to not only read, but also discuss the current state of affairs. For example, a possible war, they ask Shtokman. He simply and succinctly explains the nature of imperialist wars, forcing the Cossacks to think. On the same day, a church holiday, the whole farm in the service, including Miron Grigorievich. But his prayer is interrupted by Mitka with the terrible news that Natalia is dying.
Chapter 17 Gregory had to cross the melted river. After questioning the Ukrainian, he decided that it was not dangerous. But in fact, he almost drowned. He barely got out, spent the night in one house, and the next day went to the estate of Listnitsky, Berry. The owner sent him to rest, but the very next day forced him to go hunting with him. Hunting excitement briefly covers Melekhov, but soon passes, he thinks about the land on which he passes. Stepan Astakhov will bring the wounded wolf.
Chapter 18. In the evening, one woman had a get-together. The conversation was about husbands, children. They also asked Natalia about her husband, reminding her of grief. Her revival has passed. Arriving home, the woman wrote to Gregory, asking to clarify her position. The answer was written advice - to live alone. Natalya is crushed by grief. However, going to a festive service. On the way, she heard a conversation behind her back - gossip about her inferiority (that’s why her husband abandoned her). This completely crippled her. The heroine went to the barn and tried to commit suicide with the help of a scythe.
Chapter 19. Stepan comes to Listnitsky, he threatens Gregory, remembers when he could have killed him.
Chapter 20. In the sixth month of pregnancy, Aksinya admitted. Suspicion that the child is from Stepan wove estrangement into their relationship. Gregory is trying to save up for a service horse, his father does not want to help. The hero meets Peter, asks about the house. One summer, Gregory rode a mowing, Aksinya begged to take it. Childbirth began on a mowing. Melekhov takes her home, she suffers, says she is dying. But this is not death, she soon gives birth, Gregory cuts the umbilical cord.
Chapter 21 After the birth of Aksinya, life goes on. Gregory is not ready for service, he is confused. One day Pantelei Prokofievich arrives, brings the right. The horse helps to find the groom Sashka, but the animal is married. Soon, the father came again, this time more affectionately, looking at the child. He is going to take his son to the service, the next day. Aksinho saddens the departure of her beloved; she cries all night. The next morning, Gregory says goodbye to everyone and goes with his father, who asks about Natalia and about whether his son is raising a stranger to a child. Natalya survived, but she doesn’t want to live with her, the Melekhovs are going to take her. Upon arrival at Veshenskaya, conscripts are examined. Gregory is sent to the army. A day later, there was an examination of the horses, they rejected it at Melekhov, and my father gave the horse from the house. She passed the test, but there was a quarrel with the inspector. After all the checks, the train already carries Gregory to the army.
Part three
Chapter 1. March 1914 - the time when Natalia came to the Melekhovsky House. Pantelei Prokofievich and Ilyinichna are glad of her, ready to leave them for good. Dune hugs her. Peter reacted kindly to Natalia, only Daria was not particularly happy. Pantelei Prokofievich makes Dunyasha write to Grigory in the next letter that Natalya is with them. According to the letters of his son, it was not clear whether he was going to live with Aksinya or return home. When the father asked directly, Gregory replied that there was nothing to return. Soon the war may begin, all this will not matter. And Natalya hoped and waited. She herself did not go to games, but listened to the stories of Dunyashka. She talks about her flirting with Mishka Koshev. This summer was a premonition of impending misfortune, possibly war. The farm also stirred up a search at Shtokman, during which they found forbidden books, realized that he was a revolutionary. He is being interrogated in the board, he does not admit anything, but this is not particularly necessary.
Chapter 2 Gregory's regiment was stationed in Radziwill. Upon arrival there was an inspection of horses and a breakdown into hundreds. Then hundreds settled in different places, and a boring life began to flow. In the morning there was a cleaning of horses, where the Cossacks could talk, joke with each other. After there were long drill sessions, officers watched this, Gregory felt the wall between the Cossacks and officers. Melekhov knew how to stand up for himself, did not let the vakhmistr hit himself. All day trained young Cossacks. Boredom developed surveillance of Frany, the maid of the estate where the Cossack camp was. Once she was raped, Gregory wanted to help her, but they did not give him, they threatened with reprisal. After the violence, the helpless maid was simply thrown out.
Chapter 3 Peter, Daria, Natalya and Pantelei Prokofievich are mowing. Daria offers to wait out the heat and ride horses - to swim. Peter and Natalya support her, but a prancing person distracts them all. It turns out that the Cossacks are urgently convened to gather.
Chapter 4 It turns out mobilization has been announced. Everyone is vividly discussing this event. Some do not believe that the war began, because the bread must be removed. The farm chieftain supports this myth. But a few days later it became clear - the war.
Chapter 5 Gregory and his hundred comrades were immediately told the truth, they hurriedly spoke, and soon a battle awaits them, which scares Prokhor Zykov, a friend of Gregory. A hundred approached the village from which the inhabitants were fleeing. Some Cossacks managed to take away property from the Jews, and beat one of them with a whip. A hundred have already crossed the border; there was a village on the way where the Germans could have been, but it was decided to drop into it. Beyond the village was the city where the enemy was, who was ordered to give battle. Gregory felt only ringing in his ears and pain in his toes, fear was numbed inside. A hundred crumbled. The Austrian wanted to kill Melekhov, but a punch hit prevented the enemy. Another enemy ran nearby, a Cossack chased after him. A frightened and harmless Austrian was also killed, for which Melekhov executed himself for a long time.
Chapter 6 During the night in one of the farms on the way to the war, the Cossacks, second-rate students met with an old man, a member of Turkish companies, who advised them to keep the human truth in order to stay alive (not to take someone else's, not to touch women, to know special prayers). These same prayers were written off by the Cossacks, attached to crosses.
Chapter 7 Mitka Korshunov was in this very regiment. Hazing was not uncommon, it was even encouraged by the authorities. The old Cossack Kryuchkov periodically scoffed at him, he forced him to say the nickname of the warlord directly with him, who was driving behind. Apparently, the offender did not look back, so he insisted, and the governor scolded him. A hundred laborers in the estate of Pan. After lunch, there was some free time for talking, songs and fairy tales. Soon they appointed the highest review, the regiment struggled to bring in a decent form. And they soon said that the war had begun, all were loaded into trains and sent to the west.
Chapter 8 Stopping at a temporary camp, several Cossacks went on reconnaissance. In intelligence, they managed to get drunk, and also learn from the border guard that the enemy would advance soon. Soon the detachment also found the Germans, barely escaped, killing one of the officers.
Chapter 9 From this accident made a feat. Cossack Kryuchkov, one of the participants, received George (the others were ignored).
Chapter 10 Gregory inside had pain from the first murder. All Cossacks changed, scorched by the fire of war. Soon, hundreds of second-priority people poured from their own farm, the meeting was joyful. Gregory confesses to Peter in his longing. It turned out that he was sending the second-priority ones to another place, the brothers parted again. Peter advises Gregory to at least send obeisances to Natalia, she lives only him. Dunyasha grew up, soon married. Aksinya was seen only once, she took things from Stepan, who harbored a mortal resentment against Gregory, promised to kill him in the first battle. Soon the brothers part, Peter gives his brother a prayer.
Chapter 11 A diary was found that tells about Elizabeth Mokhova, she completely fell after Mitka. The girl was a medical student. At first they just spend time together. The narrator falls in love with Elizabeth, confesses to her. She is not confident in her feelings, but invites him to try to live. During a life together, a financial problem arises sharply. And soon they were opposed to each other. But sorry to part, the storyteller is trying to re-educate her. Nothing comes out, they break up. A longing flares up, from which the war distracts the terrifying narrator. He does not like teachings, cold and military life. The shock is the killing of people. As a result, the storyteller was killed, and Gregory found his diary.
Chapter 12 Gregory seeks a fulcrum in his soul, but cannot find it. He meets Cossack Chubaty. He says that Melekhov’s heart is fluid, it would be better if he studied cutting (an example he immediately shows on a birch). And Gregory is studying. Once a small detachment of Cossacks rode up to the enemy unnoticed. After a sharp attack, they surrendered. Chubaty searched one of the prisoners, he was ready for cooperation, treated him with tobacco. He needs to be driven away to headquarters, Chubaty volunteered to see off. But on the way he killed, Gregory was struck by this, promised to kill Chubaty himself. But he didn’t.
Chapter 13 There was a battle to capture the town. Hundred Gregory was in reserve, but by noon was brought into business. Melekhov cut the Austrian, but he was wounded in the head.
Chapter 14. Eugene Listnitsky decided to transfer from the guard to the army in order to be useful. And now he is already on the train, on the top shelf. Upon arrival, he was brought to the regiment by a doctor who had to leave the wounded in the right place because of his transfer to the unnecessary, he believes that they will lose the war. Dead horse, wounded, blood - the picture is bleak. The commander of Liznitsky looks tired, for which Eugene penetrates respect for him. It turned out that he just played cards and drank at night.
Chapter 15 Listnitsky's regiment participated in crossing the river. Officers were in the same apartment, in a calm time they were discussing the state of affairs. Someone believes that the role of the cavalry will be reduced to zero, there will only be cars. The next day, Listnitsky met with Bunchuk, who volunteered to go on a trip and later went on reconnaissance. Bunchuk asked for transfer to the machine gun team, he was soon transferred.
Chapter 16. Melekhov received a letter that Grigory was killed. For the family it was a terrible grief.
Chapter 17 After 12 days, Peter sent a letter. Gregory was not killed, but wounded, but received the George Cross. Pantelei Prokofievich boasts of this event, even to Miron Grigorievich. Matchmakers talk about their children and their separate lives. Father Gregory says that he can do nothing, they disagree in a quarrel.
Chapter 18. Natalia decided to go to Yagodnoye to Aksinya, ask to give Gregory. She does it in secret while Daria is going to the games.
Chapter 19. In Yagodny, too, there were changes due to the war. Aksinya was experiencing separation from Gregory, but received short and cold letters from him. She became attached to her daughter, who became more and more like Melekhov. The arrival of Natalia and her requests came as a surprise. Aksinya answered with a sharp refusal, she laughs at her rival.
Chapter 20. Having regained consciousness after being wounded in the middle of the field, Gregory decided to crawl towards his own. Then he found a wounded officer, helped him get to the dressing station, despite the fact that he himself was hard. Returning to the camp, Melekhov immediately began to look for a horse. Gregory was hastily bandaged, the blood didn’t even stop, so Chubaty undertakes to treat him, having sprinkled gunpowder, cobwebs and earth on the wound. Then the kitchen arrived, hungry Gregory eats eagerly. The food and conversations were interrupted by shelling. Melekhov was wounded again, this time the eye was injured.
Chapter 21 Gregory is sent to the rear to treat the eye, he enjoys clean linen and calm. He ends up in an eye hospital where he is comfortably accommodated.
Chapter 22. The military unit, where Listnitsky serves, is in a difficult situation: the enemy found out about all the plans, the attack was routed, and Eugene himself was wounded. And in Yagodnoye everything is as before. But the daughter of Aksigny is ill with scarlet fever, the medical assistant says that she cannot be saved. Soon, the girl dies in the arms of her mother. Since then, Aksinya, as if she herself died. At this time, Eugene arrives to heal the wound. He himself used the grief of the maidservant: he came to comfort her and stayed for the night. She tried to drive him away, but gave up, distraught from affection and comfort.
Chapter 23. Gregory met Garanzha at the hospital, who led him to think about social injustice, explained it, gave rise to doubts in Gregory’s soul about the correctness of the existing situation. He was soon discharged, having been sent to the hospital because of an opening wound on his head. The hospital was visited by a person from the imperial house. Brilliant visitors went around the chambers, spoke to Gregory, who did not express reverence, but abruptly gathered himself “out of necessity”. The head of the hospital scribbled Melekhov, and he asked to go home.
Chapter 24. The first of Berry saw Gregory grandfather Sasha. He admitted to him that Aksinya was unfaithful. However, Melekhov did not start with a scandal. But the beloved herself cried, taking off his shoes. He did not show, soon went to sleep. The next morning, he suggested that Eugene ride it. He completely ceased to worry that Gregory guessed. But Melekhov brought him away and unfastened his whip. Then he returned home, quilted Axinho and left. Gregory returned home, where he was delighted. He even went to bed with Natalia.
